Y21 Woman #4 / Elizabeth Chin

Y21: Why did you decide to strike out as an educator?

Liz: Since university days, I’ve been actively giving 1-1 private tuition, teaching in education centres and also contract teaching in a secondary school. I’ve enjoyed the interaction with students, love the process of grooming them and also imparting knowledge. Hence, I knew right from the start that the Education industry is the way to go right after graduation!

Y21: What does your typical day look like?

Liz: I start my day with a good sweat sesh at the gym. It can be anything - run, strength and conditioning, cardio, swim, spin, barre, boxing etc. I just need a good one hour to work on myself.

This is followed by home and making breakfast for my baby boy, spending the next few hours bonding over toys and books before work starts for the day.

Y21: What challenges do you face in your day-to-day life?

Liz: I think striking a good balance between work commitments and time as a mother is the biggest challenge. My boy constantly needs me, and I’ll need to learn how to balance it out with work.

Y21: Where do you look for creative inspiration?

Liz: I love random browsing on Instagram and Pinterest when I have time!

Y21: What's your personal style?

Liz: As a mum now, I love anything that’s easy, convenient and stylish. I usually go for slip-on pieces and also a good pair of sliders. It’s also perfect for our humid weather! And oh, anything with pockets is definitely a bonus :)

Y21: What makes you happy?

Liz: My family being safe, healthy and well. That’s the biggest comfort in life that makes me happy.

Y21: What does freedom mean to you?

Liz: Freedom means being able to express my thoughts freely. Very thankful to an understanding partner who is always here to listen and to bounce off any ideas.

Y21: Any tips on maintaining a healthy work life balance?

Liz: Yes, always set time for yourself and family members. Also know that while we may be replaceable at work, we’re never replaceable in the hearts of our family members.

Y21: You’re both a mum and an educator. How do you balance your time between the two?

Liz: I usually dedicate the first half of the day to my baby, and then the second half to work! Also, I try not to bring work home so that time at home is purely for him.

Y21: What advice would you give new educators?

Liz: Enjoy what you’re doing! It’s a rewarding career, but one that takes time to see ( positive ) changes in the kiddos. Everyday is a work-in-progress with them.
